The Spook's Apprentice, published as The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch in the United States, is a 2004 children's dark fantasy novel by Joseph Delaney. It was published by The Bodley Head and Red Fox in the United Kingdom, and by Greenwillow Books in the United States. It is the first book in The Wardstone Chronicles, the first arc of the Spook's series. The book has sold more than 3 million copies and won the Sefton Book Award, the Hampshire Book Award and the Prix Plaisirs de Lire. It was adapted into a play script, the feature film Seventh Son, and a French graphic novel. The novel follows Thomas "Tom" Ward, a 12-year-old farm boy from the County, a fictional area based on Lancashire. As the seventh son of a seventh son, Tom can see ghosts, boggarts, ghasts and other supernatural creatures, which leads to his apprenticeship under John Gregory, the County's Spook.
