Toby Fox

Robert F. "Toby" Fox (born October 11, 1991) is an American indie game developer and composer. He is best known for creating the role-playing video games (RPGs) Undertale and Deltarune, as well as composing their soundtracks. Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, Fox grew interested in the Mother series during his childhood. Significantly influenced by EarthBound as an aspiring video game developer, Fox used RPG Maker to create RPGs with his brothers. Inspired by Starmen.net, an EarthBound fan site, Fox began creating ROM hacks of EarthBound under the username Radiation, releasing the EarthBound Halloween Hack in 2008. Largely a self-taught musician, Fox began relearning the piano through middle and high school to play video game music. He also joined the music team for Homestuck, a webcomic by Andrew Hussie. During his time at Northeastern University in Boston, where Fox continued to reside, Fox conceived Undertale and Deltarune. He successfully raised funds for Undertale's development through Kickstarter and created it almost entirely by himself. Undertale was released in 2015, and is ranked by numerous publications as one of the best video games of all time, with Fox's score additionally often listed among the best video game soundtracks. Starting in 2018, Fox began releasing chapters of Deltarune, with five of its planned seven chapters available as of September 2026. Separately, Fox has been involved with the Japanese video game industry through developer connections, has contributed to game soundtracks, collaborated with musicians, and launched charity events related to his games.
