Founded in Delft in 2014, it provides conventional bicycles and electric bicycles for a recurring monthly fee that includes maintenance and repairs. The company expanded from the Netherlands into other European markets during the late 2010s and early 2020s. By 2025, it operated in 45 cities across eight countries. In 2026, Swapfiets acquired German e-bike subscription company Dance, bringing the combined customer base to around 290,000.
