An eponym is a person or thing after which someone or something is named. For example, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, is the eponym of the sandwich. Adjectives derived from the word eponym include eponymous and eponymic. Eponyms are commonly used for time periods, places, innovations, biological nomenclature, astronomical objects, works of art and media, and tribal names. Various orthographic conventions are used for eponyms.
